Comparison

Metal Sentinel vs. Metals.live

Metals.live ran a free endpoint, api.metals.live/v1/spot, that returned gold, silver, platinum and palladium prices in US dollars without an API key. It began returning errors in 2023, and metals.live now redirects to a domain-for-sale page. Metal Sentinel covers the same four metals and six more, in 180+ currencies, with a free plan.

What happened to Metals.live

Archived copies of api.metals.live/v1/spot show it returning prices until January 2023. By September 2023 the endpoint answered with a 502 error, and in November 2026 metals.live redirects to a domain-for-sale listing. Any code that still calls it gets no data, and there is no newer version to upgrade to.

Switching from api.metals.live

Before

GET https://api.metals.live/v1/spot

After

GET https://metal-sentinel.p.rapidapi.com/api/metal-quote?symbol=AU&currency=USD
  1. Subscribe to the free plan on RapidAPI and send your key in the X-RapidAPI-Key header.
  2. Request one metal per call with symbol AU, AG, PT or PD. Four calls replace one /v1/spot call.
  3. Read the price from the bid and ask fields. They come back as numbers, not strings.
  4. Plan your polling around the free limit of 1,500 requests a day. That covers all four metals refreshed about every four minutes.
